Taib’s son was legally married to Australian

Despite claims to the contrary, checks show Taib’s son was married to Aida at the time of his sister’s wedding in August 2000, not 1999.

Doubts were today cast when Sarawak business entrepreneur Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib was accused of having brought an unmarried Australian woman to the wedding of his sibling Hanifah Hajar Taib in which his first wife Shahnaz Abdul Majid was also present.

In the cross examination, lawyer Akberdin bin Haji Abdul Kader, acting for Shahnaz, insisted that Abu Bekir was not legally married to the Australian Aida Louise Karen Hiley in August 1999 when he presented a marriage certificate as evidence that Abu Bekir had only married her in February 2000.

Akberdin told the court that Hanifah’s wedding was in August 1999 and would therefore mean that Mahmud was not married to the Australian at that time.

A contentious debate ensued when Abu Bekir insisted he was already married to his Australian wife when she was brought to his sibling’s wedding which was well attended by many including his Australian in-laws.

Abu Bekir made this testimony today before Judge Muhamad Abdul Karim Wahab at the Shariah High Court in Kuala Lumpur.

Both plaintiff and defendant were then ordered by the judge to verify the facts and present to the court at the next hearing, the marriage certificates of both Abu Bekir to his Australian wife Aida, as well as the certificate attesting the date of Hanifah’s wedding.

Checks later by FMT of the news archives showed that Hanifah was married to Syed Ahmad Alwee Asree on August 3, 2000 and not in 1999 as insisted by Akberdin. The glamorous wedding was widely reported by the local media at the time.

Today’s hearing was the continuation of Shahnaz’s demand of RM100 million as mutaah (conciliatory gift) from Taib’s son.

Abu Bekir believes his former wife Shahnaz had been duped into believing that he has massive wealth running into billions of Ringgit. In a previous hearing on September 2 last year, he said his former wife had been made to believe by Canadian ‘fraudsters’ Cullen Johnson and Elaine White that he had multiple offshore accounts.

In addition to the RM100 million mutaah claim today, Shanaz also filed a number of other claims amounting to RM300 million for matrimonial assets division, RM200 million for child maintenance to include a terrace house in London (RM60 million), two Aston Martins (RM5.5 million), a private trust fund (RM40 million to be held by her), including a claim for half of her former husband’s assets.

Shahnaz had in her earlier testimony said that Mahmud had income and assets in excess of billions of Ringgit. She had testified that her former husband had properties both locally and abroad. She also claimed that he had a string of offshore bank accounts in Canada, the US, the Caribbean, France, Luxembourg, Monaco, Hong Kong and Switzerland.

However, Shahnaz has yet to produce in court witnesses from any of the international banks to testify and confirm this.

“The reason why my wife and her team have not been able to produce any witnesses from the international arena is simply because the offshore bank accounts do not exist. They are forgeries.”

Hearing for the mutaah continues on January 29, 2015.
