The Syariah Court of Appeal in Kuala Lumpur today allowed Shahnaz A Majid’s lawyer’s application for the appeal against her former husband Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib to be postponed to May 12.
Bekir is a son of former Sarawak chief minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud.
In requesting the postponement, Shahnaz’s lawyer Rafie Mohd Shafie told the three member bench he was unwell.
The highest religious court allowed the postponement despite an objection voiced by Bekir’s lawyer, Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar.
He told the court that Rafie had told him earlier that he did not manage to prepare for the case as Ibrahim Rahman, the father of PKR de-facto leader, Anwar Ibrahim, had died on Sunday morning. Rafie’s son is married to a daughter of Anwar.
“Furthermore, my client had to travel from Europe for this case,” Zainul Rijal pointed out.
Judge Mahammad Ibrahim however allowed the postponement but ordered Shahnaz (right) to pay costs.
Today was fixed to hear Bekir’s application to strike out Shahnaz’s suit of RM121 million for child maintenance and Shahnaz’s appeal to compel her former husband to furnish details of all his assets to her.
Bekir and Shahnaz divorced in May 2012.
