July 14 verdict looms in high stakes divorce battle

The Kuala Lumpur Shariah Appeals Court today heard the contentious maintenance claim in the on-going divorce battle between Shahnaz Abdul Majid and former husband Sarawak entrepreneur Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib.

The parties are disputing a multi-million dollar maintenance claim brought by Shahnaz on behalf of their only son, Raden Murya Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The claim is understood to be for in excess of RM121 million and involves a terrace house in London (said to be worth RM60 million), a residence in Bukit Tunku (RM10 million), two Aston Martins (RM5.5 million), medical insurance (RM5 million) and a private trust fund (RM40 million) to be held and managed by Shahnaz.

Lawyers acting for Mahmud, however, applied to have the claim struck out on the ground that Shahnaz no longer had legal capacity to make the claim as Raden has passed the age of majority of 18 years.

The appeal was heard before judges Mahammad bin Ibrahim, Muhamad Asri bin Abdullah and Yusof bin Musa.

The court fied July 14 to deliver its verdict.

Shahnaz was represented by Mohd Rafie Mohd Shafie and Akberdin Abdul Kader.

Mahmud, son of Sarawak Governor Abdul Taib Mahmud, was represented by Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar and Saadiah Din.
