Sibu will host Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s 79th birthday celebrations from September 11 to 13.
On the first day, a thanksgiving session will be held at An Nur Mosque in the evening and a community concert at 8pm, followed by a fireworks display at the Sibu Town Square.
“The highlight will be the parade at the Town Square from 8.30am to 10.30am on September 12 by 79 contingents including from the army, government departments, associations, schools and non-governmental organisations,” said state Local Government and Community Development Minister Wong Soon Koh.
He was speaking at a press conference after chairing a meeting on the celebrations at the Resident’s Office, here, today.
There will also be a parade comprising armoured vehicles and a flypast of military helicopters. A ship parade will be held at the confluence of the Rejang and Igan Rivers.
An investiture ceremony will be held at 11.30am at RH Hotel and a state banquet in the evening at the same venue.
An exhibition on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri and Astana Negeri will be held throughout the three days at Dewan Kompleks Islam in Jalan Awang Ramli Amit.
A tea reception will be held at Dewan Kompleks Islam and the final round of the Yayasan Sarawak Gold Cup football competition will be held at Sibu Stadium on September 13.
