Malaysian weightlifting legend William Yeo Hap Ee passed away this morning in Kuching, Sarawak after four years of battling leukaemia. He was 77. He leaves behind a wife and four children.
Some of his greatest achievements include winning the silver medal at the 1971 Seap Games in Kuala Lumpur, a gold at the 1977 edition and two bronze medals from the 1979 and 1981 Games.
William was also named Sarawak Sportsman in 1972 and 1978. One of his most memorable achievements was winning the gold medal at the Afro-Asia Oceania Weightlifting Championships in Perth, Australia in 1993.
“We will forever be grateful to William, a former athlete who has done so much for the country through sports.
“As a sign of respect, we will induct him into the YAKEB (National Ex-Athletes Foundation) Hall of Fame,” said YAKEB chairman Datuk Malek Noor. Malek, together with other representatives from YAKEB, managed to visit William in April when he was admitted tot the General Hospital in Kuching.
Under a special scheme by YAKEB, William’s family will receive a RM20,000 contribution.
